Microsoft introduced new enhanced features in Data deduplication with Windows Server 2012 R2. The deduplication features helps to find and remove duplication within data without compromising its fidelity or integrity. The goal is to store more data in less space by segmenting files into small variable-sized chunks (32–128 KB) and maintaining a single copy of each chunk. Redundant copies of the chunk are replaced by a reference to the single copy.
SCCM / ConfigMgr administrators should also know about “Data Deduplication”. Windows Server 2012 R2 Data Deduplication canbe enabled on SCCM / ConfigMgr distribution points hosted to achieve additional disk space savings. The SCCM content library provides disk space savings by only storing a single copy of a file (thereby providing SIS) even when the file is part of multiple packages.
