When I wrote about release of ConfigMgr SCCM 2012 SP2 in the post “SCCM ConfigMgr 2012 SP2 and vNext Release Dates“, some people got confused, how SCCM 2012 SP2? Why not SCCM 2012 R3? Two different streams of a same product (SCCM) doesn’t make much sense. Isn’t it? Probably, Microsoft wanted to remove the confusions between Feature packs (SCCM 2007 R2, SCCM 2007 R3 ) and Service Packs (SCCM 2012 SP1, SCCM 2012 SP2). They’re planning to stream line it with the release of Service Pack 2. Yes, Microsoft is NOT releasing R3 feature pack for SCCM 2012 rather they are going to release another Service Pack and it’s SCCM 2012 SP2. As I mentioned in the previous post mentioned above, Microsoft would be looking forward to release SCCM (ConfigMgr) 2012 SP2 before Ignite (May 1st week) conference. My guess is SCCM 2012 SP2 will be released some time in April.
Following post will give you more details about the features of SP2 and SP1 of SCCM 2012 !! I’ve predicted it may released on April but it’s going to get released on 14 May 2016.

It’s very different. CU is cumulative Update and Cumulative update is collection of all the hot-fixes up to date. … SP is service pack and It’s an update or combination of previous updates helps to make our product more reliable. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/824684
