Most of us running labs SCCM ConfigMgr on our workstations or laptops. Have you ever tried a backup solution to backup Hyper-V machines in the lab? Altaro Hyper-V Backup is totally FREE for 2 VMs forever. It’s very easy to install and configure. It took only 15-17 minutes to install and configure. The greatest advantage of Altaro Hyper-V backup solution is very easy to configure and troubleshoot. There are 3 editions of Altaro Hyper-V backup Free Edition, Standard Edition and Unlimited Edition.
In this post I’m going to give a walk through how to configure Altaro Hyper-V backup solution and basic troubleshooting steps. Altaro Hyper-V backup solution uses the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer on your Hyper-V machine or server. Since Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 do not have the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer, Altaro does not support backing up VM’s hosted on Windows 8 and 8.1.
Following are the Altaro related services which will be running on your Altaro Hyper-V backup server.
I’ve 4 virtual Hyper-V machines in the lab. I use Altaro to backup those hyper-v machines.
Select Hyper-V Guests VMs : Installation of the backup Altaro Hyper-V software may take 5-10 minutes. After the installation you need to configure or select which are the Hyper-V machines you’re going take backup.
Setup the backup drive now : Select the drive which you want to use for backing up Hyper-V virtual machines using Altaro backup solution.
There are two type of backup locations. First is Setup Primary backup location in your local drive. Second is offsite backup location. Here I’m going to use primary backup location as my D drive. If you’ve more complex requirement then you would be able to copy the Hyper-V machines backup to another Data Center in different location (Offsite Backup location). Using Altaro WAN acceleration technologies along with offsite Altaro backup server.
When you enable Offsite copy feature which is part of Altaro then you’ll get 2 options 1) Take Copy of backup to your own Altaro backup server and 2) Take copy of the backup to USB Drive/ NAS Drive / Network Folder Share. I don’t have NAS and network share so I used my 1 TB external HDD to take the offsite backup.
Altaro will ensure the data protection and compression of offsite copy of the backup. All the data copied to second location using the offsite copy feature is always compressed and encrypted. You can create an encryption key within few seconds.
Altaro also provides very backup scheduling assistance as well. 1) Backup Schedule Group and 2) Backup Schedule Calculator . This will help the backup administrators to schedule the backup and monitor the backup schedules very easy.
With a Backup schedule group you can configure a set of backup times when a group of Virtual Machines will be backed up. The VMs configured in a scheduled group will be backed up sequentially at one of the scheduled times. VMs can be added to this group once these settings are configured. The backup schedule calculator will show you the list of times/dates when the virtual machines assigned to this scheduled group will be backed up.
Manual Backup will help to run the backup immediately.Select the VMs which you want to take Manual Backup and click on the button “Backup Selected“. See, Altaro Hyper Backup is busy taking backup of VMs.
As part of Altaro backup,it will create Shadow Copy
When you get some error during backup, no need to worry. Altaro has a another application component called Error Reporter can be found in the Start Menu > All Programs > Altaro program group. You can generate a ZIP file of log file and other reports with Altaro Error Reporter and sent to Altaro support to resolve the issue.
Altaro Hyper-V Backup_ErrorReport.zip file will be created.
