Let’s see how easy you can deploy New Microsoft Edge browser using Endpoint Manager SCCM. SCCM team created an out of box experience to create an SCCM application for new edge browser (chromium based) deployment (Deploy Microsoft Edge Browser).

Introduction

I’m sure SCCM 1910 production version shall have the feature called Microsoft Edge Management. Currently, this feature is part of SCCM 1911 technical preview.

You also have All Microsoft Edge Update node as well in SCCM 1911 for having the latest version of Microsoft edge browser.

NOTE! – The production version of Microsoft Edge browser is going to be released on 15th January 2020. I feel the production versions of Microsoft edge browser will be available in SCCM console console once it’s released.

The new edge browser is independent application which you can install on Windows 7 and Windows 10 devices similar to Google Chrome or Safari browser.

Create Microsoft Edge Browser Application

  • Open SCCM Console and Navigate to \Software Library\Overview\Microsoft Edge Management
  • Click on Create Microsoft Edge Application

  • Microsoft Edge Client Installation Wizard shall get launched
  • Enter the following Details:
    • Name – Microsoft Edge Beta Channel
    • Description – Microsoft Edge Beta Channel
    • Content Location – UNC path – Microsoft Edge Client Installation Files will be downloaded to this location if they don’t exist

  • The following page of the wizard shall give you the option to select Microsoft Edge client settings
  • Specify the settings for Microsoft Edge Client
    • Channel Selection options at the moment are
      • Beta
      • Dev
    • You can also select the specific version of Microsoft Edge browser
      • In this example I have selected Latest version available

NOTE! – We don’t have non English language selection at this point of time. I’m sure Microsoft Edge team is working to release all the supported language versions of Microsoft Edge. I’m hoping to have some of these non English versions available by production version of Microsoft Edge.

  • I won’t deploy application now. Deployment of Microsoft Edge will be covered in the below section of this post.

  • Download the Microsoft Edge source and you can get more details via PatchDownloader.log

NOTE! – The SCCM application creation wizard for Microsoft Edge Client shall take care of X64 and X86 versions. The size of the source files is ~138 MB.

Let’s check the details of Edge application in details.

  • Navigate to \Software Library\Overview\Application Management\Applications
  • Select the Microsoft Edge Beta Channel Client
  • The above SCCM wizard helped to create two deployment types
    • X64
    • X86

Create New Icon Edge

  • Save the following new Microsoft Edge Icon

  • Navigate to \Software Library\Overview\Application Management\Applications
  • Select Microsoft Edge application and Right click and select Properties
  • Click on Software Center and Click on Browse button near ICON
  • Select 512×512 icon (you can use the above icon)
  • Click Apply and OK

Deploy Microsoft Edge Browser

Let’s deploy Microsoft Edge to a collection of Devices using the following method.

  • Navigate to \Software Library\Overview\Application Management\Applications
  • Right click on the Microsoft Edge Application as shown below
  • Select the option called Deploy

  • Specify the name for the deployment
  • Select the Collection from the drop down below
  • Click NEXT to continue

  • Click on Add button
  • And Select the Distribution Point or DP Group. DP is one of the source location for SCCM clients
  • Click OK and Next

  • Select the deployment settings for Edge browser
  • There are two Action option available:
    • Install
    • Uninstall
  • There are two options to deploy application
    • Available – User needs to go into Software Center and install once the application is available
    • Required – The application will automatically installed on the targeted device as per the schedule
  • There are another two options to repair or approval of application
    • Allow End users to attempt to repair this application
    • An administrator must approve a request for this application on the device
  • Click on Next
