These inventory capabilities allow organizations to collect and manage information about devices enrolled in Intune. Regarding custom inventory, Intune provides the ability to create custom configurations and collect specific device information beyond the default inventory options. This feature enables organizations to tailor inventory collection based on their unique requirements.
Admins can find detailed instructions and guidelines for implementing software and hardware inventory across various device platforms by referring to the official documentation. Intune doesn’t offer any flexibility in custom inventory options within the portal.
Microsoft Intune collects the basic details from different device platforms. These are basic hardware or software information about the managed devices. These details can be checked for each individual device. Is Intune Software Inventory missing? This could be one of the reasons!
What is Intune Inventory?
Intune collects Software and Hardware details of managed devices using the default MDM stack. That is the default inventory available in Intune. The default Intune Inventory reports are not part of the Reports node in Intune.
What is Intune Custom Inventory?
There are Custom inventory options available for Windows devices. This is available only for Windows devices. There are no Custom inventory options for iOS, MacOS, Android, etc. You can collect Custom Inventory using several community solutions.

In this video, let’s discuss Intune Inventory for Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows devices. Inventory management is a crucial aspect of Microsoft Intune, as it allows organizations to gain insights into the applications and hardware details of their managed devices.
Intune Inventory
Let’s check the Intune portal, software inventories, hardware inventories, etc. Log in to the Microsoft Intune admin portal and select Devices on the left side of Intune portal.
- Select Overview under devices.
- The Overview section in Intune shows the “manage devices by platform.” It includes the following.
- Windows
- iOS/iPadOS
- macOS
- Android
- Linux

Intune Hardware Inventory for Android Devices
Click the Android devices and check the inventory details available by default. Go to Android devices and select the Android device you have. Select the Hardware tab on the left side of the below window. In the hardware tab, you can see the following details, which are available by default.
- System Details
- Operating System details
- Storage – Storage is not available because it’s a work profile
- Battery
- System enclosure
- Network details
- Network service
Intune Software Inventory for Android Devices
Software inventory in Microsoft Intune refers to the collection and management of discovered applications on managed devices. Click the Discovered apps and check what are the applications available.
- Intune can detect or discover 277 applications, as shown in the top right corner of the below-discovered apps window.
- So it has the details of these applications‘ names and the application version number.
Hardware Inventory in MacOS Devices
Click the MacOS devices and check the inventory details available by default. Go to hardware, under the Hardware section, you will be able to see the operating system details. Under MacOS, you can see the storage details and product name model details.
- The hardware section in MacOS shows the following details System Details, Operating System details, Storage, Battery, System enclosure, Network details, and Network service.
Software Inventory in MacOS Devices
You can easily select the software inventory by clicking on discovered apps for Mac devices. If you click on discovered apps, you can see the Mac application names and application versions. In total, are 322 applications detected by Intune, and many Mac-related applications are available along with the application versions.
- If you want to export applications, an Export option is also available.
Hardware Inventory in iOS Devices
If you look at iOS devices, you can see the operating system, storage, system enclosure details, etc. It also helps you to show the Battery level. It also allows you to show the Networking details etc.
Software Inventory in iOS Devices
Discovered apps are the software inventory. For the iOS device, it is not fully managed iOS, which is why it only provides the collected application information. Only one application is detected by Intune.
- It would be best if you were very careful about this. Apple Business Manager manages the device if it is not (ADM).
- You will get only the information about the company portal and some managed applications under software inventory for iOS devices.
Hardware Inventory in Windows Devices
The hardware inventory in Windows devices shows the details such as system, operating system storage, etc. The storage details are getting collected, and the manufacturer details are also available along with processor architecture. Even Ethernet MAC, wired IP address details, etc., are available.
- All those details are available under hardware inventory.
Software Inventory in Windows Devices
If you click on discovered applications, you can see the software inventory details for Windows devices. The total number of Intune-detected applications is 88 for the selected device. You can see all the application names and versions in the software section.
Note – The Managed Apps report also includes Enterprise App Catalog apps.
Intune Custom Inventory
You can use a simple script to collect some custom Inventory details. The script gathers custom inventory using Wmi details. It collects these details from that system Wmi. You can see the results on the left side of the below window. It contains the serial number, release date, etc.
- There are Custom inventory options available for Windows devices. This is available only for Windows devices.
