Azure Front Door Service Connectivity Issue | MEM Admin Center Portal Impact?

Microsoft Azure is dealing with 2 major issues now. The latest one is the Azure Front Door Service Connectivity Issue. Many Microsoft 365 core cloud services use Azure Front Door for better connectivity and performance.

Microsoft says, “Starting at 16:10 UTC on 07 Sep 2022, customers using Azure Front Door could be experiencing connectivity issues. This could also be impacting customers’ ability to access other Azure services that leverage Azure Front Door, this includes the Azure Management Portal.”

Microsoft noted the spike in traffic as a potential cause for Azure Front Door Service. This is a really interesting potential cause. This issue could impact many Microsoft core cloud services. Another issue is also going on with Azure Cosmos DB and is also causing issues for M365 services.

The MEM Admin Center portal was down for some time. We don’t know whether the Front Door connectivity issue caused that outage or not. Microsoft has not confirmed anything on the cause of that outage yet. Recently there was a major Azure outage because of a DNS issue on Linux boxes.

The issue MO427682 with Azure Front Door is fixed – End time 7th Sept 2022, 7:55 PM UTC. Microsoft is continuing its investigation into the infrastructure responsible for connections to Azure Front Door APIs to ascertain methods to reinforce the environment against similar future impacts.

Issue with Azure Front Door API

I’m surprised to see no issue reported related to AVD (Azure Virtual Desktop) and Windows 365 (Cloud PC). Both of these services use Azure Front Door! There could be a performance impact because of the suboptimal state of the Azure Front Door.

The issue highlighted by Microsoft in the incident ticket MO427682 is that the portions of infrastructure responsible for connections to Azure Front Door APIs are operating in a suboptimal state. Following are some of the Microsoft services that are impacted.

  • Microsoft Intune users may be unable to set up remote help sessions
  • Microsoft Endpoint Manager users may not be able to access said service.
  • Microsoft Teams users may intermittently fail to join meetings from their browser. Repeated attempts to join meetings may intermittently succeed.

Adaptiva

Microsoft is investigating a spike in traffic as a potential cause. This traffic spike has subsided, and they are currently working on remediating the residual impact. They have already started recovering several nodes that are showing intermittent connectivity issues.

As per the latest reports, for customers who are experiencing connectivity issues, retries are likely to be successful. Most customers should be seeing recovery at this stage.
