Monitoring Folders Files with SCOM OpsMgr

Let us learn about Monitoring Folders Files with SCOM OpsMgr.As an SCCM admin, I would love to monitor the Inbox folders of SCCM servers. SCCM CB inbox folders are not very critical as SCCM 2007.

But those folders are significant in identifying issues. Monitoring Folders and Files are essential for other applications as well.

I have seen IT Pros looking for solutions to monitor their Oracle, SQL, or SharePoint application cache folders and files. There are loads of scripts available in the community to scan the files and folders. But this can cause an impact on the performance of your applications.

Can Monitoring Folders and Files cause performance issues?

Yes, there are possibilities of significant performance impact on your applications if you didn’t configure the monitoring folders and files systematically.

As I mentioned above, many scripts are available in the community to monitor folders and files via SCOM. But all are optimized? I don’t think so.

The Discovery of folders and files should be optimized

My recommendation is to configure the discovery of files and folders carefully. This will help us avoid any performance issues because of discovery and monitoring folders. Run the discovery only on the specific folders. And use optimized SCOM Management Packs (MP) to monitor folders and files.

SCOM Management Pack for Monitoring Folders and Files

Savision Management Pack for SCOM helps to simplify Windows files and folder monitoring. It adds a simple but powerful wizard that allows users to create rules for monitoring specific Windows files and folders.

This SCOM Management Pack for Monitoring folders and files will easily target the file(s) you want to monitor. You have two options to configure either manually or using a wildcard. Check out a few options that are available to the monitor:-

Whether the files count is too high or too low
Whether the total file size (in kilobytes) is too high or too low
Whether the file’s recent date modified is too old

  1. Savision has been acquired by MartelloTech, and this management pack has been abandoned. I found a bug in the MP for when there are many (>100,000) files, reached out to MartelloTech about it and a potential fix for the issue, and was advised that they will not support the MP:

    “Hi Jeremy,

We appreciate you reaching out to us and apologize for the delay. We understand you have found problems with our management pack, however, we regret to inform you that we do not provide support for this.

This was a legacy resource from a previous product we no longer offer – we hope you understand.

    Thanks,
    Martello

  2. Hi Jeremy,

Is it possible to use this MP across Domains where CIFS has been blocked by Firewall due to security reasons?
I have this MP running in the same Domain as SCOM Mgmt Servers and it works fine but have just setup one monitor on a folder across the firewall to another Domain and it is showing a flatline.
    Any ideas?
