  • The main advantage of this update is that it is smaller and quicker because it only includes changes since the last update, not from the original release.
  • Most importantly, it will save a lot of time and hard drive space
  •  Microsoft will release these updates periodically, creating multiple checkpoints during the lifecycle of a Windows version.
  • Subsequent updates will only include the changes made since the last checkpoint rather than all changes since the original release.
  • The Windows 11 system can combine these checkpoints, so only the updates that your device doesn’t already have will be downloaded and installed.

Note: This update is applied to devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, as well as Windows Server 2025. You can preview this with Windows Insider Preview Build 26120.1252 (Dev Channel).

Thoughts for Managing Cumulative Updates

You don’t need to change anything if you are using Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch, or WSUS. Updates will appear as usual, just improved.

This only applies to devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and Windows Server 2025. For Windows 10 or earlier versions of Windows 11, the update process remains similar to previous monthly or annual updates.
