What are the Latest Features of Notepad in Windows 11?

Notepad in Windows 11 has been updated with new features to make it easier and better to use. You can open multiple files in tabs, check spelling, and use autocorrect. It also supports special characters like emoji joiners and control symbols.
1. Tabs – Open multiple documents in one window using tabs.
2. Spell check & Autocorrect – Helps catch and fix spelling errors automatically.
3. Dark Mode – Easier on the eyes in low-light settings.
4. Character Count – Shows the number of characters in your text.

You can easily use the Notepad App on your Windows 11 PC. You can install the Notepad App from the Microsoft Store or their official website. The official website of Notepad is notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/. The following are the steps to install Notepad App on your Windows 11 pc from the Microsoft Store.

You can easily find Notepad in the Microsoft Store. Simply search for “Notepad” and then click the “Get” button to install it. Refer to the screenshot below for guidance on how to install Notepad on your Windows 11 PC.

The screenshot below shows that Notepad is starting to download. It highlights that Notepad now supports AI features and is built for Copilot+ PCs. The installation process is in the “Getting ready” phase, checking dependencies.

You can easily use Notepad on your Windows 11 PC by clicking the Open button. This fast and simple editor has been a staple of Windows for years. Use it to view, edit, and search through plain text documents instantly.

The top menu has options like File, Edit, and View. A message explains that Notepad now autosaves your progress and restores it the next time you open the app. Another message mentions that if you are signed in with a Microsoft account, your data may be used for AI safety and security purposes.

The File menu in Notepad lets you manage your files. You can create, open, save or print documents. It also includes “Save As” to rename or change the file format, and “Page Setup” to adjust print settings. More details are given in the table below.

The View menu in Notepad allows users to adjust how text is displayed. It includes Zoom, Status bar, and Word Wrap. These settings help improve readability and make editing text easier. More information can be found below.

- Makes long lines go to the next line instead of scrolling sideways.
- Zoom
- Zoom in(Ctrl+Plus)– Make text bigger.
- Zoom out(Ctrl+Minus)– Make text smaller.
- Reset default zoom(Ctrl+0)– Go back to normal size.
- Status Bar
- Shows line and column numbers at the bottom.
- Only works if Word Wrap is off.

Word Suggestion in Notepad
The given screenshot shows text prediction or word suggestion while typing in Notepad on Windows 11. This is not a built-in feature of Notepad itself, but rather a Windows 11 system feature that works across apps, including Notepad. Here you can see an example of word suggestion. When I typed soft, a suggestion box appears showing full word suggestions like software, softball.

When you select a text and right-click, you will get a page as shown in the screenshot below. Here, several options are available, including cut, copy, paste, and delete. These let you change the text. For example For example, you can copy some text, then paste it somewhere else to make a copy.
The use of the Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Select All, and Search with Bing options has been mentioned earlier in this post. The usage of the remaining options is given below.
- Rewrite – Change the words of the selected text.
- Customised rewrite – Change the words in a specific style.
- Summarise – Give a short version of the selected text.
- Spelling – Check and fix spelling mistakes.
- Display and Unicode – Show special codes for the selected text.

Copilot in Notepad
When you click on the copilot icon, it provides various writing suggestions such as Rewrite(Ctrl+D), summarise(Ctrl+M), make shorter, etc. This tool helps improve or modify written content efficiently.
- Make shorter – Reduces the length of the text while keeping the meaning.
- Make longer – Expand the text by adding more details.
- Change tone – Adjust how the text sounds, like making it more formal or friendly.
- Change format – Alters the style or layout of the text, such as turning it into a list or paragraphs.

When you click on any feature from the copilot options, you will see a page like the screenshot below. To use this feature, you need Al credits that are included with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. When you’re signed in to use AI features, Microsoft will collect information about your requests for AI safety and security. You can click on the Learn more option to learn more about this, and click the View plan button to see plan details.

Change tone allows the user to change the tone of the selected text. Options include Formal, casual, inspirational, Humor. Pick a tone like casual, formal, and Notepad will show different versions. Choose the one you like best.
- Formal – Makes the text tone more professional or academic.
- Casual – Simplifies the language to sound more relaxed or conversational.
- Inspirational – Makes the text sound motivational.
- Humor – Adds a humorous twist.

In Notepad, you can change the format of the text by using the Change format button. Different writing styles, like business, academic, and poetry are supported. These features help users customise content effectively for various purposes.
- Paragraph – Converts the text into a structured paragraph format.
- List – Changes the text into bullet points.
- Business – Adjust the tone to suit formal business communication.
- Academic – Formats the text to match an academic style.
- Marketing – Adapts the writing for promotional content.
- Poetry – Converts the content into a poetic structure.

In Windows 11, you can open Notepad settings by clicking the Gear icon in the top corner of the application. It allows you to customise various aspects of the Notepad experience, including App theme, Font, and Word wrap. Here you can see the version information, links to Microsoft license terms, and an option to send feedback. You can use the Help button to understand how to configure and use the Notepad app.

To change the Notepad theme, click the gear icon in the top right of the application, then select App theme. You can choose “Light“, “Dark” to force the Notepad App to use a dark theme, or select “Use system setting” to follow your Windows system’s theme.

Notepad is a very basic text editor in Windows, and its formatting options are quite limited compared to a rich text editor. When you select the Font in the settings section, you will see three options there. Family option to change the Font family, Style option used to change font style, and Size option used to change font size. There are more than 50 Font families. 15 are shown in this table.

You can find many more options in the Notepad settings section, such as Word wrap, Opening Notepad, Recent files, etc. The use of Word wrap in Notepad is to make text easier to read without horizontal scrolling. You can turn Word wrap on and off here. Similarly, recent files can be turned on and off. Other options are given below.

- Open in a new Window.
- When Notepad starts
- Continue previous session.
- Start new session and discard unsaved changes.

Windows 11 Notepad has a built-in spell check that underlines misspelt words in red. Turn on Spell check under the Spelling section. You can also turn on autocorrect to fix mistakes as you type. The Copilot option allows you to use AI to help with writing, summarising, and other tasks. When you turn on the Copilot option here, you will have access to Copilot features.

You can create notes with a title in Notepad as shown below. Here you can see an example of a created note. The title of the note is Computer Science. Notes will be automatically saved here. The Plus button is used to open a new page.

The screenshot below shows the Tab management options in Windows 11 Notepad. When you right-click a tab, a menu appears with options to open a New tab(Ctrl+ N), close the tab(Ctrl+ W), close other tabs, and close tabs to the right. These features help users manage multiple open documents more efficiently within Notepad.
